The Spanish Honor Society opens the door to a vibrant world of language and culture, offering students a unique platform to sharpen their Spanish skills while making a tangible impact in their community. This dynamic organization celebrates the beauty of the Spanish language and inspires members to take action, blending linguistic proficiency with a strong commitment to service and cultural engagement.
“The Spanish Honor Society provides a community where students can speak Spanish and improve their learning,” Co-president, senior Sara Figueiras said. “They can interact with each other and learn about not only the language but also the customs of different Spanish-speaking communities.”
Joining Spanish Honor Society can be a way for students to feel connected to family roots.
“I specifically wanted to join the Spanish Honor Society because I have a Hispanic background, so I love learning more about Hispanic cultures and being able to speak about my own,” Figueiras said.
Figueiras emphasizes what the organization offers for its members. The society also organizes various activities throughout the year.
“Along with our monthly meetings, we have different events, especially the one coming up where students will learn more about various festivities. Apart from the monthly meetings, we also host a World Culture Night, where we showcase aspects of Spanish culture,” Figueiras said.
Through these activities, the Spanish Honor Society not only enhances language skills but also enriches students’ cultural understanding, providing a supportive environment for personal and academic growth.
“I always liked Spanish, and I always want to get better at it,” sophomore Sahil Shah said. “It is nice to have a society of people like me and hopefully I can grow from it.”
The Spanish Honor Society represents more than just an academic pursuit. It is a chance to incorporate Spanish into his daily life. Looking ahead, students eagerly participate in upcoming activities that promote both learning and service.
“It will be nice to help volunteers because the community always needs more volunteers, and I am also looking forward to the actual meeting,” Shah said.
The collaborative environment fosters growth and camaraderie among members, enhancing their overall experience.
“From what I know, it is not a huge investment timewise,” Shah said. “If you do not have that much time, you can still do it. There is not that much harm doing this if you actually like Spanish because it will enhance your ability and you will get better in class.”
For Allison Hughes, a junior and treasurer of the club, being in the organization creates memorable experiences.
“At our last meeting, we did a fun group painting activity that everyone really enjoyed,” Hughes said. “We researched famous Spanish painters and then we encouraged people to replicate that as a group, having people pass around the canvas every 2 minutes to make it a collaborative piece.”
The club has a commitment to community service.
“We have done a number of service projects throughout, like making cards for people in hospitals and other service projects that can make a positive impact on our community,” Hughes said. “But more importantly, we encourage people to expand their Spanish language skills, especially being in Texas, where we have a large Hispanic community that improves people’s Spanish skills.”
Through these activities, the Spanish Honor Society not only enhances language skills but also enriches students’ cultural understanding, providing a supportive environment for personal and academic growth.
“Being part of the Spanish Honor Society has allowed me to meet incredible people who share my passion for the language,” Hughes said. “We learn together and motivate each other to improve.”
