Football for Beginners
Quarterback- Connor Smith
The job of the quarterback can be complicated, learning plays and leading the offense is the ultimate goal.
“Every week to prepare we watch film on the other team to formulate our game plan,” varsity Backup-Quarterback Connor Smith said.
The quarterback touches the ball on every down and is responsible for distributing the football.
”Our job is to lead the offense on every play to score, either passing it or running it,” Smith said.
Linebacker- Taylor Whistler
Linebackers are the anchor of the defense, controlling the middle of the field and protecting against the run and pass.
“We are the captain of the defense, we run the defense and our job is to make big plays,” varsity linebacker Taylor Whistler said.
The linebackers are required to watch film to study the other team’s defense to know their plays and how to stop them.
“Every week to prepare we watch film and study the other team to be successful on Friday night,” Whistler said.
Studying the offense and changing the defense due to an audible (change in the offenses play) is an important job as a linebacker. They need to know what the other teams offense is doing every play not to get beat.
“The game is fun, and I love playing and always have,” Whistler said.
Zac Cawthorn- Defensive Line
The defensive line’s job is too pressure the other teams quarterback to make mistakes, and they also stop the run.
“We are the base of the defense, we clean up the messes to make sure we end every play,” varsity lineman Zac Cawthorn said.
The big boys of the football team are made on the line, going up against each other to control the line of scrimmage. Both lines affect how their offense or defense has to play the game.
“We just focus on getting the quarterback and playing as hard as we can,”Cawthorn said.
