A Force to Be Reckoned With
Two state titles in four years is something to cause heads to turn. Two state titles in four years of a clubs existence? Heads are whipping around as the Allen archery team won yet another state title and will advance to the national tournament in May, in Louisville, Kentucky.
“It feels awesome. It always feels good when you put the time into it,” Coach Anderson said about winning state.
To top it off, Allen also had the top boy in the state, senior Trevor Hoberg, who shot a 293. Out of 300.
“I shot the bulls-eye or just around the bulls-eye every time except seven times,” Hoberg said. There are 30 shots to take, in five arrow increments, and he only missed the mark seven times.
Hoberg started his freshman year saying “I found out there was an archery club and I looked to join cause archery is pretty cool so I looked to join the little club of about 15 people.”
The club was a small sprout off of outdoor adventures, an elective class that teaches everything to fishing, gun procedures, and of course, archery.
“It’s insane” Trevor said about winning state for the second time in as many years. Many clubs and sports take years to fully develop and to find the right techniques to win on the big stage.
“It was a club of literally 15 freshman and we qualified to go to state.” He went on to say. They got third place in state that year, which also was the first year of the groups’ existence. It would be the start of something not many thought would happen; state titles.
In true Allen fashion, they won big.
“We won state by 80 points” Trevor said. “That’s a whole team of people that would have to pick it up significantly in order to get that high.”
Nationals is a whole different league,” Anderson said. Instead of the 40 teams at state there are now 500 teams at national. The stage continues to grow for this young Program but Anderson believes they not only have the ability, but the desire to go out and have a good showing in Louisville at the tournament.
“It’ll be tough but we’re ready. The kids are working hard. If the kids are working hard we’re good to go,” Anderson went on to say.
There will be even more pressure, especially having the number one individual girl and guy in the state of Texas.
“Anytime you’re the individual state champion going into the national tournament, they’re expected to do better, they’re going to have a little pressure, and they’re expected to do well. Expected to do better.”
2 State titles and the number one boy and girl individually in a state as big as ours is a force to be reckoned with. Just another day in the life of an Allen High School athletic program; creating dynasties.
