Getting through alive

We live in a world plagued by inequality, injustice, and hate. Growing up in our generation is difficult, to say the least, and getting through high school is nothing short of hellish. In my 16 years of life, I’ve learned a bit about how to get through with minimal damage.

  1. Confidence ≠ Cockiness

It’s very easy to lose love for yourself. On a daily basis, we’re bombarded by constant reminders that we just aren’t good enough. Beauty has been slimmed down to a very strict set of guidelines, and being an outlier has its own consequences. Newsflash, it’s actually not a crime to think you’re pretty great. Being confident is an attractive trait in itself. You won’t always be pretty great, but that’s okay too. Dare to fall in love with yourself.

2)  Teachers aren’t really that bad

It’s true that there will be the odd few that will be pure evil, but for the most part teachers really do have your best interests in mind. I can promise you that they didn’t pursue teaching for the pay. Your teachers are there to help you out, but they can’t do anything if you’re too afraid/inconsiderate/“too cool” to ask any questions.

3) Chasing after girls/boys is counterproductive

You’re in high school. There will be plenty of time for the serious stuff later on. As my mom tells me (often and annoyingly), “The right one will come once you stop searching.”

4) No dream is too big.

This is self-explanatory. There will always be someone who will try to tell you not to pursue your dreams because they’re too big or too unrealistic. This is only because they have failed to reach their goals. You are capable of anything you truly pursue. Believe in yourself, and you will go far.
