Eagles Move to 1-0 in District Play
The Allen Eagles started scoring early in their 45-15 win over Mckinney Boyd with a 9-yard touchdown run by Kirby Bennett. Less than a minute later Misi Tupou intercepted a pass and took it to the endzone to put the lead 14-0 with 8:20 left in the first quarter.
Defensive Coordinator Cory Cain said of the interception, “It did set the tone. We always talk about go make a play, and make a play early.”
The Eagles didn’t look back much after that with starting quarterback Seth Green running for a 40-yard touchdown and following it up with a shuffle pass to running back Trent Barrance to put the lead at 28-3. The Eagles then had one more touchdown pass in the first half from the ten yard line to Tevyn Stevenson to put them up 35-3. The Broncos scored a touchdown in the final minute of the game to put the score at 35-9 going into halftime.
Defensive back Anthony Taylor returned a blocked field goal 86 yards for what would have been a touchdown, but it was called back because of a block in the back.
The second half started with the Broncos in possession of the ball but they were forced to punt. After a 37-yard completion from Green to Stevenson, Lionell McConnell ran a sweep in to put the Eagles up 42-9 with 8 minutes in the third quarter.
The Broncos had a chance to score with 5 minutes left in the third quarter, but they fumbled the ball in the end zone and it was recovered by defensive back Dallas George.
Green started the game for the Eagles and played the majority of it, rushing for one touchdown and throwing for three.
“He had the hot hand at the end of last week, and he deserved to start this week,” Offensive Coordinator Kyle Westerberg said. Mitchell Jonke did come in late in the game but after getting sacked and then throwing two incomplete passes, the Eagles were forced to punt.
When asked if it was still Green’s ball to lose for next week’s game Westerberg said, “I think so, we’ll evaluate the film tomorrow morning and see what’s taking place.”
With this win tonight the Eagles move to 1-0 in district play. Next week’s homecoming game will be played against Plano Senior High at Eagle Stadium.
