Eagles Fall to Top Ranked District Opponent
The Allen Eagles took on the Plano East Panthers in a boys district basketball game. The Panthers were number one in the district at the start of the game and The Eagles were following closely, only two overall points shy of being tied for first.
Allen looked stagnant on the offensive side of the ball with all but two of their points coming in the first quarter. Meanwhile Plano East looked dominant on both ends of the floor knocking down a handful of three pointers, and racking up nine blocks on the opposite end in the first half alone. The damage finally stopped with the buzzer sounding at the half with Plano East leading 27-13.
The Eagles came back in the start of the second half and showed signs of life that were not present during the first. After going on a six to nothing run, there seemed to be a slight momentum shift. This was confirmed as junior guard Dylan Ditzenberger stole an inbound pass and made the shot, while getting fouled. Although the quarter would end with back to back Plano East three pointers, Allen had cut the lead to just six, with the Panthers leading 40-34.
The final quarter started off with the Eagles keeping the momentum they had ended the previous one with senior Ben Dixon getting fouled while getting to the rim, and splitting the free throws. Allen wanted to push the pace in the final quarter with Ditzenberger driving into the lane and making layups fall while drawing a foul. Unfortunately he was rarely able to convert the three point play, missing crucial free throws, including two down the stretch that could have given Allen the lead.
Allen would continue to fight as the clock ran down, even jumping ahead 49-48 after a made three pointer by junior shooting forward Cameron Christon.
Plano East would respond with a three of their own, and re-take the lead, this time not giving it up for remaining time in the game.
The Eagles would fall to the number one team in the district, Plano East 53-49.
Allen will take on Mckinney Boyd in another district matchup on Tuesday, at home.
