North Texas Public Health Announcement
Zika virus is easily transferred through an Aedes mosquito bite and can cause harmful symptoms such as rash, joint pain and red eyes.
The CDC has notified where the virus is spreading, causing many people to be aware of their surroundings. According to the World Health Organization, there is no specific cure to the virus because doctors focus more on relieving treatments. There’s no specific vaccine available for this virus.
The infection in the United States is due to the traveling rate to and from tropical areas. There have been recent ties of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a rare syndrome that affects the nervous system) following the Zika virus.
The main way to avoid this virus is by protecting the skin from getting bit by a mosquito. By spraying yourself with bug spray before you go outside and being aware of your surroundings, you can be protected. The virus is normally resolved within 2-7 days because of certain treatments. Ibuprofen, Benadryl and Tylenol can help a lot with relieving the pain.
Oral rehydration therapy has been known to help as well. The patient can also receive medications for fever and pain. Take caution in where you travel to protect yourself from the virus. If symptoms get worse, be sure to contact your doctor for further medical care.
