Allen Track Runs to the Next Round
A district championship for the boys track team capped off a successful District 6-6A tournament for the Allen High School track team on April 14 at Marauder Stadium in Flower Mound.
The boys varsity team finished with 161 points, ahead of second place Hebron by 63 points and third place Plano West by 77 points. The boys placed first in high jump, triple jump, the 4×200 and 4×100-meter relays and the 300- and 110-meter hurdles.
Junior Jake Johnson broke the school record for the 3200-meter race, finishing in 9 minutes and 23 seconds, and then broke the school record for the 1600-meter race with a 4:22 on his way to a second and third place finish respectively.
“It was just a great feeling [to win district],” Johnson said. “We grabbed the trophy and we ran off. It’s big for the team because we’ve come a long way.”
The girls varsity team finished in second place, with wins in five of six field events. The girls took first place finishes in triple jump, shot put, long jump, high jump and discus. Junior Chelsey Cole placed in the top four in three different events, including first place finishes in triple jump and long jump. Cole will be advancing individually to the Area competition.
“I would say hard work and determination [are responsible for our successful],” Cole said. “Even though varsity girls got second this year, we are more than ready for next year.”
The qualifying members on the boys team will advance to the District 5/6-6A Area championships on April 21 and 22 at Keller High School.
“[The goal is] to advance to each round [and] hopefully go to state,” long distance coach Kirk Trent said. “That is obviously the main goal, to make it to state and to do the best that we can.”
