Felix’s Top 10 – Week of 5/1

TNS

Prince in 1984.

I feel like every time I write these intro paragraphs, I either boost or quietly detest pop culture in a snarky, tongue-in-cheek manner. And while that’s kinda my thing, these last two weeks have been far too exhausting to laugh at. Our world is incredibly trivial at times, you guys. Welcome to Felix’s Top 10 everyone, let’s get started.

#10. The upcoming film adaptation of the video game “Tomb Raider” has cast its female lead. Many believed the main character of Lara Croft would be portrayed by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lead Daisy Ridley, but the casting director instead went with Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander. Vikander is most well-known for her work in “Ex Machina” and “The Danish Girl,” but I’ve got to be honest, I’m really mad I couldn’t see more of Daisy Ridley being a really cool female lead.

#9. The founding fathers of angsty teenage punk have announced another album. Blink-182 revealed that their upcoming record “California” would hit shelves in July, and while I’ll admit to listening to “I Miss You” once in awhile, I’m kind of surprised this band still exists. Two of the original lineup left (Tom DeLonge actually left twice, so, yikes) and I kind of feel like they’re slowly, and sadly, being dethroned by Five Seconds of Summer.

#8. Rihanna and Calvin Harris released another collaborative single, “This Is What You Came For.” Their first effort, “We Found Love,” was arguably one of the defining songs of the late 2000s, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this track made it up there too. It’s an incredible track with off-the-charts production and vocals. Also, Harris’ girlfriend Taylor Swift lowkey promoted the track before it came out with a jacket featuring the cover. So that’s wild.

#7. Target has been in the news recently over their views on the entire transgender bathroom “debate.” And I use the word “debate” in quotes because it really shouldn’t be a debate. If you identify as male, use the male restroom, and vice versa with women. It doesn’t matter if you’re trans or not, you’re in there for, like, 30 seconds. It’s not that deep. And yet, nearly one million people have an issue with this, claiming they feel unsafe or they’re scared for their children. In fact, they’re trying to boycott Target until they change the policy, which honestly seems unlikely at this point. Not to mention, because of this, people feel justified in bringing their guns into restrooms. But, if you’re a random person, are you going to feel more threatened by someone trying to do their business, or someone with a loaded weapon?

#6. Nintendo has announced a new console, which has been code-named “NX,” set for release in 2016. It’s said to be the successor to the Wii U. I’m kind of surprised they’re still making household consoles, considering the Wii U didn’t do nearly as well as the Wii. In fact, it really didn’t do well at all. Especially when compared to the 3DS. But, y’know, what are we gonna play Super Smash Bros on otherwise?

#5. “Game of Thrones” made its triumphant return to TV, and with it, confused their viewers even more. The entire “Is Jon Snow Dead?” topic has been conversed so much that even I, a person who doesn’t even watch the show, have formed an educated and developed opinion on it, and they didn’t waste too much time milking it. By the second episode of the new season, we had our answer. No spoilers, but it was all over Twitter.

#4. Beyoncé embarked on her world tour in support of her latest album, dubbed as the “Formation World Tour.” And even if you’re not this woman’s biggest fan, give her credit where it’s due. I don’t think very many other artists could get away with releasing an album a little over a week or two before the tour begins. Guys. Her fans knew the lyrics. They knew all of the lyrics. If this wasn’t enough proof that her fans must be feared, don’t worry. I’ve got more.

#3. Yes. This list item is also about Beyoncé. But you really can’t have too much of her. At least, I don’t think so. A couple of women might be a little fed up with her latest album “Lemonade,” though. Here’s the breakdown: after more than a few lyrics on songs like “Hold Up,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and especially “Sorry,” referenced the possibility of her husband Jay-Z cheating, the Beyhive, of course, was furious. The “Sorry” lyrics read “He only want me when I’m not there/ He better call Becky with the good hair.” Soon after, fashion designer Rachel Roy posted a selfie on Instagram and captioned it, “Good hair don’t care.” This, of course, led people to believe she was “Becky.” Beyoncé’s fans quickly began to attack her ruthlessly, causing her to delete the post and even make another statement regarding it. Some people suspected other celebrities, including Rita Ora and, after mistaking Roy for another person, Rachael Ray. Isn’t this just…really messy? I also want to add, while I’m sure it’s been discussed, I personally never saw one mention of Jay-Z’s cheating. People were too caught up in going after his purported “mistresses,” and not really calling out the man himself for cheating on his wife. But the best part is: supposedly, the rumors weren’t even real. Beyoncé and Jay-Z purposefully put the rumors on the album to make more money and hype up the album even more. I think it’s fair to say Beyoncé is THE BEST scammer in the game.

#2. Drake released his long-awaited album “Views” on April 29 to a ravenous crowd of fans. After releasing “Hotline Bling” last fall, and “Summer Sixteen” earlier this year (which didn’t even make it onto the album?), fans were anticipating his first album since 2013’s “Nothing Was The Same” for a long time. Which kind of confuses me, because didn’t he just release “If You’re Reading This, You’re Too Late” last year? What was all the hype about? This album really wasn’t that incredible, and I’m not convinced it really needed to be 20 tracks long (looking at you, “Grammys”). It’s not like there hasn’t been any word from this man since 2013 or something. I’ve spent longer waiting for Lorde’s next release than Drake.

#1. They say celebrities die in threes, and I really thought this cycle had been fulfilled, but I guess the world hasn’t taken enough talent from 2016 yet. Prince passed away at 57 on April 21 in his estate, leaving no will behind. Seriously, guys, this year is starting to get grim. We’ve lost at least three icons, depending on which circles you talk to, and we’re not even halfway through this year. I’m really afraid that we’ll finally lose Betty White by the end of these 12 months.
