Column: Adele Back on Hiatus

Right after Adele said “Hello” to us, we may have to say goodbye.

Adele plans to take a five-year hiatus to care of her son Angelo. Before releasing her album, “25,”Adele took a hiatus for three years, which was already heart-wrenching enough, but now she will be gone for another five years. I’m disappointed that she is leaving after recently coming back, but it’s understandable. She wants to be a good mother to her son.

Afterall, her new album was a major success, so she deserves a break before releasing another album. In a way, backing out of the spotlight before coming back provided a surprise factor that increased her popularity and success. Think about how big a deal it was for “Hello” to be released. When people found out Adele was back, they were overjoyed and bought the new album and songs. If Adele were to do this again, it may create an even bigger reaction because she’d be gone for longer.

On the other hand, if Adele waits too long, everyone’s obsession over her could fizzle out. On top of that, the same method can’t be used twice in a row and have the same positive effect.

For most artists, the quality of their music plays into their success. Adele is different. Though I hate to say it, with her, musical quality doesn’t really matter. She has developed such a huge global fanbase that it just doesn’t make a difference. She could release a rap/hip-hop album and the fans wouldn’t care. Okay, they might care a little, but you get my point. Of course with Adele’s vocal quality, she can’t do much wrong, but that’s a completely different story.

In reality, the success of Adele’s planned hiatus depends on her fans because the fans decide almost everything in the music business. If Adele’s next album is received well, it may be known as an even greater comeback album than “25.” However, if fans don’t come back after five years, there is no way to recover  from that.

My take on this whole situation? Adele has always been a really private person, so it’s not surprising that she wants to raise her son away from the media. For that, I applaud her decision because I think all stars’ children and relatives can be negatively affected by the media (case in point: the Kardashians). However, it’s a bit of bummer since it feels like Adele just came back. I’ve been looking forward to hearing more music from her.

What will Adele even do for her comeback to beat “25”? I guess I along with the rest of the world will find out in five years, but whether it’s well-received or not, there is no doubt it’ll be amazing.
