Eagle Swim and Dive Teams Advance to Regionals
The Allen swim and dive teams capped off a successful District 7-6A tournament with district championships for both the boys’ and girls’ swim teams as well as two regional qualifiers from the dive team. The tournament took place on Jan. 19 and 20 at the Natatorium in Allen.
The boys swim team beat Plano East by just under 100 points, while the girls swim team beat out Plano East by a little less than 50 points. Combined, the swim team will be sending 23 swimmers to state. The boys finished first, second and third in the 500-yard freestyle, and the girls swept the top three positions in the 100-yard butterfly.
“I had never 1-2-3’d an event in my 19 years here [before district],” head swim coach Brent Mitchell said. “To do it was absolutely amazing. I felt like I had to go to the podium quite a bit, which was nice. It’s a good feeling to have as a coach.”
Junior swimmer Jason Park finished first place in the 100-freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, earning him the honor of Male Athlete of the Meet. Park credits a large part of his success to Mitchell, who was named Male Swim Coach of the Meet.
“I don’t think there’s a better coach than Brent Mitchell,” Park said. “He is honestly the best. He puts his heart and soul into everything. He truly cares about the sport and about the team. He’s just there to focus on helping us get better. The list just goes on, the man is great.”
Senior diver Kyle Schonefeld placed first among male divers at district while breaking the school’s boys dive record and being named Boy Diver of the Year. He will be joined at regionals by sophomore Kaylea McCain, who placed fifth at district.
“I got a 399.95, and I wanted that 400 mark, so that’s what I’m going to go for [at regionals],” Schonefeld said. “I also want to be the first guy that goes to state for Allen [in diving], so that’s a lot of pressure because this is my last time competing at regionals.”
The regional meet for both the swim and dive teams will be Feb. 2 at the LISD Aquatic Center in Lewisville.
